Chinese Wedding Tea Ceremony Order

The tea ceremony is an important Chinese wedding tradition. It is a way for the couple to show respect and gratitude to their elders, and for the families to formally welcome the newlyweds.

The exact order can be different for every family, but there are some simple principles that can help you plan.

1. Prepare Each Side Separately

The bride and groom should first prepare the tea ceremony order for their own side of the family.

After that, check the list with your parents and grandparents. This helps make sure everyone is comfortable with the final arrangement.

2. Start With the Elders

The general rule is to serve tea according to generation and seniority. The most senior family members usually go first.

A typical order might be 一般的顺序可以是:

  1. Grandparents —

  2. Parents — 父母

  3. Older uncles and aunts —

  4. Younger uncles and aunts —

  5. Older siblings —

  6. Younger siblings —

  7. Older cousins —

  8. Younger cousins and children —

The exact order should always be confirmed with the family, especially when there are different family customs.

3. A Simple Example

  • Parents — 父母

  • Older uncle and his wife from dad's side

  • Younger aunt and her husband from mum's side

  • Older brother and his date —

  • Younger sister and her fiancé —

  • Older cousin and his wife —

  • Their 5-year-old son — 5

  • One underage cousin —

A possible tea ceremony order would be 敬茶顺序可以是:

  1. Maternal grandparents (阿公、阿婆)

  2. Parents
    父母

  3. Older uncle and his wife

  4. Younger aunt and her husband

  5. Older brother

  6. Younger sister and her fiancé

  7. Older cousin and his wife

  8. Underage cousin

  9. 5-year-old nephew

4. What About Partners?

A partner who is simply dating a family member is generally not considered an official member of the family, so they would usually not participate in the tea ceremony.

A fiancé or fiancée may participate because they are formally joining the family.

Of course, families may have different customs, so check with the parents beforehand.

5. Children, Underage Family Members and Fur Babies

Younger family members can also take part in the tea ceremony.

Traditionally, younger family members serve tea to the newlyweds, rather than receiving tea from them.

This is why children are usually placed at the end of the tea ceremony.

6. Other Rules to Remember

Elders before parents

Grandparents and other senior elders are generally served before the parents.

Father's side before mother's side

A common traditional order is the father's side first, followed by the mother's side.

Bride's side before groom's side

When considering the overall wedding tea ceremony, the bride's family is commonly served before the groom's family.

7. The Most Important Rule

There is no single tea ceremony order that works for every Chinese family.

Family traditions can be different, and some families may have their own preferences.

The best approach is:

  1. Draft your own family's order.

  2. Let your partner do the same for their family.

  3. Check both lists with your parents and grandparents.

  4. Finalise the order before the wedding day.

The tea ceremony is ultimately about respect, gratitude and bringing two families together.

So don't worry too much about getting every detail "perfect". The most important thing is that both families are comfortable with the arrangement and that the elders feel respected.

Need a Little Help

Working out the tea ceremony order can sometimes be more complicated than it looks, especially when there are large families, different traditions or questions about who should participate. If you’re not sure where to start, a tea ceremony host, MC or wedding planner can help you work through the family list, clarify the order and guide everyone through the ceremony on the day — so you can focus on enjoying the moment with your family.

Happy planning!
